Direct Mail Post Cards

Why Direct Mail Marketing is a Popular Advertising Tool

Without advertising, many businesses would soon succumb to the competition.  Advertising is one way to let the current customer base, and potentially new consumers, know why your product or service is exactly what they need.  A good ad will also compel them to satisfy that need right now, instead of waiting for a more convenient time. However, not all advertising campaigns will have the best return on your investment.  After comparing different strategies, you will better understand why direct mail postcard marketing is a popular advertising tool.

The Business Card

Probably one of the oldest forms of advertising was the business card.  At first, it was used more for social networking.  Customarily, a caller would leave their card, if the master or mistress of the house was not at home.  Eventually, the calling card evolved into the business card, as it was handed out as a form of contact and advertisement.

Business cards are only partially successful, because it’s impossible for business owners to personally contact every individual that fits the demographics of the product or service provided.  Also, the card tends to get misplaced in the bottom of a purse or tossed in the trash.

The Newspaper

The newspaper was a popular form of advertising at one time.  However, this venue has lost some of its allure.  To ensure that the ad is viewed by the most subscribers, a little blurb tucked between used cars and apartments for rent is not enough.  It’s important to pay for a significant space.  Then, how do you know your target audience will see the ad?  Subscriptions to newspapers are down.  Why buy the paper, if you can go on the Internet and get the same information.

The Internet

A lot of entrepreneurs have started paying for advertisement on the Internet. Every time someone searches for information, ads pop up on the right-hand side of the screen.  The ads are generally related to the keywords used in the search, and may provide the user with information on the product or service desired.

But, what about those that live in a specific area that need personal attention from a company in their city or town.  Unless the business also has a website, it will be difficult to find what is needed in the local area.

Television

Everyone watches television.  So, it stands to reason that potential customers will see the ad and bring you their business.  Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.  With television, it’s hard to target a specific audience – the people that really would benefit from your product or service.

In addition, unless you are a big company with a large budget for advertising, this medium is cost prohibitive.  In other words, you are more likely not to get a very good return on your investment.  The most affordable advertisements on television do not show in primetime, when most of the viewers are watching.  Instead, they are likely to air in the middle of the night or early in the morning, when most people are sleeping.  You can easily spend thousands of dollars and never know if your campaign had any positive results.

Direct Mail Postcards

Direct mail postcards are becoming an increasingly popular form of advertisement, because of the comparatively low cost and the ability to saturate the target audience.  After all, everyone with an address receives mail. In many cases, the entrepreneur already has the database of contact information needed to send out the postcards to former, current, and potential clients.  If not, there are companies that can help develop a mailing list that fit the particular demographic guidelines.

In addition, many smaller companies can purchase programs to help them develop the perfect direct mail campaign on their own.  Although it might be a good idea to have a professional handle the first advertisement, in order to learn how to make the postcards more effective, it is possible to save time and money by making the cards in-house.

The key to the perfect mailer campaign is in the presentation.  If a piece of mail isn’t a bill or a personal letter, recipients will only give it a quick glance before tossing it in the trash.  Therefore, it’s vital to make an impression within those couple of golden seconds. The postcard needs to intrigue the reader right away, giving them a sense of curiosity, so they will check out the mailer.

But, after getting their attention, it’s vital to give the readers an incentive to seek out your product or service.  You must be willing to give, in order to get their business. Now you have several advertising options to consider.  It’s not hard to understand why direct mail postcard marketing is becoming more popular as an advertising tool. It provides an opportunity for a better return on your investment.
